2027 federal holiday dates

Each holiday name links to its month’s printable calendar. Read the statutory column as the date specified by law; the observed column shows the usual federal day off for a Monday–Friday workweek. Matching dates are shown in both columns deliberately, so you do not have to infer whether an observance has shifted. When copying an entry into a planner, include its name and whether you mean the statutory holiday or the observed closure; that short label makes a later review much clearer.

Dates follow 5 U.S.C. 6103. Weekend federal holidays use the OPM observed-day rule (Saturday → Friday, Sunday → Monday) for most Monday–Friday federal schedules. Observed dates are labeled separately from the statutory date.

How the weekend observed-day rule works

Under the standard rule, a Saturday federal holiday is generally observed on the preceding Friday, and a Sunday federal holiday on the following Monday. In 2027, Juneteenth National Independence Day is Saturday, June 19, with Friday, June 18 observed. Independence Day is Sunday, July 4, with Monday, July 5 observed. Christmas Day is Saturday, December 25, with Friday, December 24 observed.

The observed day is not a second holiday added to the statutory count. It is the date used for the work schedule covered by the rule. Keep both dates when recording an office closure or arranging travel: a public celebration may take place on the statutory date while an office closes on the observed day.

These dates describe the standard Monday–Friday federal schedule. Federal employees with other work schedules can have different in-lieu-of holidays under OPM guidance. Private employers, schools, state offices, and local services may follow their own calendars. Check the organization’s published schedule before relying on a date for an appointment or deadline.

Names and weekday holidays

Some federal holidays use fixed numbered dates, including New Year’s Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Veterans Day, and Christmas Day. Their weekdays change each year, so a weekend adjustment may be needed. Other holidays are defined by a weekday within a month.

Washington’s Birthday, also called Presidents Day, is February 15 in 2027. The table uses the statutory federal names throughout. Different state or local observances may use another name or date. This is a federal reference, not a complete list of US commemorations, school breaks, market closures, or religious observances. A day absent from the table can still be important to your household or organization.

The December–January boundary

New Year’s Day 2028 falls on Saturday, January 1, so its standard federal observed date is Friday, December 31, 2027. That closure falls inside the 2027 calendar year but belongs to a statutory holiday in 2028. It is not a twelfth statutory holiday in the 2027 table.

If you are planning the last week of December, consult both the December 2027 calendar and OPM’s 2028 schedule. Distinguish holidays counted by statutory year from observed weekdays occurring within a calendar year.

Popular observances we do not mark on the grid

Western Easter falls on March 28, 2027; US Mother’s Day is May 9; and US Father’s Day is June 20. These are not US federal holidays under 5 U.S.C. 6103 and are not printed as holiday marks on our grids. Easter here means the Western calculation, not every church’s observance.
